High Altitude Pulmonary Edema

TITLE: High Altitude Pulmonary Edema
MEDIA: Adobe Photoshop CS5, Adobe Illustrator CS5
AUDIENCE: Popular science readers
FORMAT: 8.5 x 11″ two-page magazine spread

For this assignment our task was to research a pathological process, and illustrate its effect on a tissue over time. High altitude pulmonary edema seemed like an interesting challenge from an illustrator’s standpoint, as it represents a normal physiological response which has cycled into a fatal loop due to the environmental conditions at altitude. The progression of HAPE is a domino effect reliant on the interconnectedness of vasculature in the lung. I felt this would be best visualized by showing all of the steps concurrently in a single area of lung tissue.
